Elsa Viegas reveals the secrets of Magnifique

Tell the fans of Bijoux Indiscrets a little bit about yourself. Who’s behind the design of Bijoux Indiscrets’ accessories?

I’m a graphic designer by trade and a geek by nature. I love life and everything in it. I’m interested in so many different issues that I find inspiration in all kinds of disciplines… I’m fascinated by nature in all of its forms, colours and curiosities…like how orchids are the great tricksters of the plant world, luring in insects with pigments and shapes that mimic other creepy crawlies or with delicious nectars, when ultimately they give them nothing in return for their visits! I’m also passionate about film and love almost every genre and era. I couldn’t live without music and I’m very eclectic in my taste (the playlist depends on the mood of the day). However, after 10 years as a designer at Bijoux Indiscrets, I take great interest in issues to do with female sexuality, women’s rights and gender equality. I am a feminist. I hate when people call the vulva a vagina. There, I said it! I’m a vegan and fighting for animal rights is part of my existence. Ah, I’m also in love with an English bullterrier called Missy!

When did you discover that you wanted to design fashion-erotic products?

Ever since I was drawn to the world of erotica. I remember from very early on I just couldn’t understand why sexuality should be hidden away and why being sexual was considered vulgar. Why a woman’s decency should be measured by her hem and neckline. And I was fascinated by ‘sexy’ women. At university I discovered artists like Araki, Cindy Sherman and Nan Goldin, who captivated me, and slowly but surely I discovered that eroticism was part of my life. When we founded Bijoux Indiscrets I knew this was my place in the world and that I would be doing what I like best.

When you’re designing, who, what and where inspires you? What are your artistic influences?

Oops, I think I got a bit ahead of myself! I keep an eye on the fashion world, but not so much on the runways as the people I see on the street. I observe trends in art and photography, and watch out for F-list personalities – they’re the real daredevils and innovators, despite not being on the red carpet! I also go crazy for MUAs and stylists who break with convention, and I observe what’s going on in very niche and creative realms, which will determine what we will see in city shop windows in two or three years to come.

More specifically, what was the inspiration behind the latest Bijoux Indiscrets’ launch, Magnifique?

I saw that when you go to the beach, a festival or a pool party, your style is just as important as your sun lotion 😉

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter what beach you go to or who’s playing at what festival, but what look and what outfit; what you wear and how you stand out on social media. No bikini is complete without that statement accessory that marks the difference between a swimsuit and the perfect selfie. Likewise, feeling sexy is an attitude that can be strengthened with the right accessory, and that’s where Magnifique plays a pivotal role, enveloping the female form and enhancing femininity and sensuality.

7 new pieces and 7 exclusive designs for your brand…why were you so keen to add new items to this collection?

I wanted to bring eroticism and fashion even closer together. And besides the dual use of previous items (like the handcuff bracelets or choker necklace), I wanted these pieces to make their position clear. For them to adorn the female body and pass on the message: “I love being a woman!”

Your designs are characterised by their dual use and for being fashion and erotic accessories. What’s the aim of this dual use?

I love when two such different worlds subtly unite, when there are secrets both on public display and for your eyes only. That’s what I adore about the bracelets – they’re so simple and yet they turn into handcuffs… You can be wearing something but only you or that special someone knows the secret behind it. It gives the piece so much power and it’s empowering for you too.

It’s such an original concept! But who is it aimed at and why?

I design for women. Women who are daring. Women who choose to take control of their sexuality and who like to feel sexy.

If you had to choose just one accessory from the collection, what would it be?

I love the bikini chain. I like that you can wear it over your skin with a strappy crop top and that it hints at your body shape without revealing too much. Or that you can pair it with a bikini at a pool party – I think it’s so sexy how it frames your chest and wraps around your waist.

And finally, if Magnifique were a person, who would it be?

Cindy Crawford springs to mind…because she has that innate sensuality, that athletic frame and that boundless feminine energy. But there are many other women I could name who inspire me: all muses for many different reasons who are equally powerful in their femininity.
